What Are Pinched Nerves?
The term “pinched nerve” is commonly used to describe the pain associated with a variety of conditions. Pinched nerves can happen throughout your body based on the location of the nerves being affected. The most common areas where you’ll feel the effects of a pinched nerve are the:
- Shoulder and Neck (from compressed cervical nerves)
- Upper Chest and Back (from compressed thoracic and lumbar nerves)
- Elbow and Arm (caused by pressure on the ulnar nerve - a good example is the pain you feel when you hit your “funny bone”)
- Hand and Wrist (often caused by carpal tunnel syndrome)
Pinched Nerves Services
Most of the time, what is called a pinched nerve is actually an irritated or inflamed nerve, and the nerve itself is not pinched. However, specific instances such as carpal tunnel syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome involve true nerve compression. In these cases, injury, spasm, or inflammation of the surrounding muscles and connective tissue cause the nerve to become compressed, resulting in pain.
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist, leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers. Factors contributing to CTS include repetitive hand movements and certain medical conditions.
Thoracic outlet syndrome involves compression of nerves and/or blood vessels between the collarbone and the first rib, causing pain in the shoulders and neck, numbness in the fingers, and a weakened grip. Contributing factors include poor posture and repetitive arm movements.
Chiropractic care, including adjustments, exercises, and stretching, can effectively manage both CTS and TOS. Chiropractic adjustments aim to align the spine and joints properly, reducing nerve compression and improving mobility. Exercises and stretching strengthen muscles, support proper posture, enhance flexibility, and relieve tension, which helps reduce pain and inflammation.
By addressing the mechanical and inflammatory components of pinched nerves, individuals can experience significant pain relief and improved quality of life.
